6 Ways To Understanding Aspergers & Autism

Nowadays, Aspergers technically isn’t correct, the correct term is actually High Functioning Autism.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 59 children in the United States today.
Asperger syndrome (AS), also known as Asperger’s, is a developmental disorder characterised by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests.

I’d like to talk about the Autism Spectrum and those to live within it. Unless we know someone personally, a lot of might not be able to decribe or understand someone on the spectrum. Others may just remember movies like “Rain Man” or ” Temple Grandon” , both real life based movies about people with Autsim. I have the honor of saying that I personally do know folks under the spectrum umbrella and I jhave to say its a pleasure. I want to share and help others learn about these awesome people.

Just becuase Larry doesn’t speak or pay eye contact, does not mean they aren’t listening. Many times kids or adults under the spectrum can have lots of difficulty communicating with others or understand physical or verbal-social cues. Nevertheless, most kids and adults under the spectrum are able to carry a conversation regardless of topic in one way or another. As long as they feel comfortaable I should add, if they are comfortable wigth you, confidence will grow and they will open up more and be themselves.

“Why does Paige keep covering her ears and swaying back and forth like that?” Sometimes, swaying back and forth can be a calming mechanism for all of us, Somtimes kids and adults with Autsim may cover their ears while somthing is too scary or overwhelming, its another way to calm down silence the chaos. Depending on the individual, anything can trigger these reactions, even situations that normally wouldn’t bother you at all, like a clown laugh maybe. Either way, this is a sign of distress.

All day today , Brian kept talking to me about how much he loves his Marvel comics. Sometimes, we all get soooo excited about something new, we may tell others about it! An addictive Netflix series, or that crazy fight at the office between the two interns banging the big boss, we like to share the Madness! People under the spectrum have something exciting to talk about too, in fact they’ll probably give you much more awesome details Because they love it so much.

We really aren’t that different from each other. Just because a kid has autism doesn’t mean that he’s not still just a kid! In some form or fashion, the kids will try to get away with something, or even forget his chores. Don’t be afraid to give them credit where credit is due

Sometimes Dylan can be brutally honest. Don’t take it personally. You ever sugarcoat an answer for a friend trying to spare their feelings? Sometimes, it could be hard to do that when you’re under the Spectrum, being brutally honest it’s sometimes what feels appropriate. But they’re not trying to be mean, they just can’t help being honest!

Sometimes Sarah can be a little awkward. When you’re under the Spectrum, it may be a little difficult to understand modern social cues, they may not comprehend your intention or be able to follow the norm without questioning it. I particularly love this notion about People under the Spectrum. Some people just don’t see a problem we’re going the opposite direction, being different.

In conclusion, at the end of the day we all want the same things, love, success and to belong. I hope that this short blog has giving you a little insight about The Blue Umbrella. The color blue representing autism awareness.
